Abdominoplasty

abdominoplastyIn a traditional abdominoplasty, (tummy tuck) procedure, the cosmetic surgeon removes the excess skin that can result from significant weight loss and aging. This procedure is best suited for healthy women and men who are fairly physically fit, but are unable to achieve their desired abdominal appearance through diet and exercise.

Women whose abdominal skin and muscles have been stretched by pregnancy or further damaged by cesarean sections are good candidates for treatment. Tummy tuck procedures are also excellent for individuals who have experienced dramatic weight loss but are unhappy with the sagging belly left behind. Many patients undergo liposuction in conjunction with the tummy tuck.

What is an Abdominoplasty?
In most cases, liposuction, panniculectomy (excision of excess skin) and the tightening of stomach muscles is considered a full abdominoplasty. Variations of this procedure where only liposuction and panniculectomy are performed is considered a mini tuck. Abdominoplasty can be performed under general or local anesthesia. Dr. Morris performs all his procedures using local anesthesia in a private, state of the art surgical center using certified anesthesia providers for a comfortable and safe experience.

After microcannula liposuction is performed on the upper and lower abdomen, an incision along the bikini line is made. Next, the navel will be remodeled from the surrounding tissue so it can be returned to the proper position after the skin has been stretched into place. At this point, the cosmetic surgeon will raise a flap of abdominal skin and tighten the underlying muscle wall by drawing the muscles closer together and stitching them into their new position. Once the abdominal wall has been redefined, the cosmetic surgeon will replace the flap of skin, stretching it downward and removing any excess tissue. Then the navel will be remodeled into place. Often temporary tummy tuck drains will be inserted to allow excess fluid to drain. These drains are usually removed on postoperative day 2-4. The abdominoplasty surgery itself, usually takes about 2-5 hours.
